SAM MASON | Ecologist
ABOUT ME
I am an aspiring ecologist majoring in ecology and conservation at Griffith University. I am currently an officer in the Environmental Management Team at Brisbane City Council. I recently completed an internship in research and development of riparian vegetation assessment tools in conjunction with Scenic Rim and Ipswich Councils and the Resilient Rivers Initiative.
Throughout my studies, I have developed an interest in bushland regeneration, particularly the role of niche complementarity in enhancing the viability of restoration and rehabilitation projects. Delving into the complexity of ecosystem networks and applying this to conservation is something I plan to pursue throughout my career. A key moment in my degree has been my introduction to systematic conservation planning. This framework helps to drive clear, objective-driven proposals, which will become increasingly important as the pace of climate change increases pressure on budgets and time frames. I have always held the belief that constraints yield creative solutions and am optimistic this will lead to meaningful conservation action.

My career history includes both secondary education and graphic design. A cornerstone of these industries is communication and how to tailor experiences to a wide range of audiences. This has given me an appreciation of the nexus between design and learning and how these can be leveraged to translate esoteric ideas into content that is accessible and engaging. Bringing vitality to science communication is something I hope to advance and champion throughout my career trajectory. As a teacher, I have a strong appreciation of collaboration and the unique insights each person brings to a team experience.
Outside of my studies, I enjoy participating in conservation activities, such as the annual Gold Coast BioBlitz, assisting Ph.D. candidates with their research, and helping my local Bushcare group in Windsor. Maintaining a connection with art and creativity in my downtime is something I value greatly, alongside taking care of my health and wellbeing.
